Children’s opinions of their bodies form at a very young age. Research suggests that children as young as 3 years old can have body image issues.

How a child's parents feel about their own body and appearanc has a direct effect on how a child may see themselves.

If a parent is always complaining about their looks, frowning when they look in a mirror, disgusted when trying on clothes, it truly sends a strong message to your children:

-My body has to be perfect.

-I’m not satisfied with my body.

-A perfect body would make me happy.

-A perfect body would earn me acceptance from others.

-A perfect body would earn love and admiration, even attention.

-Perfection is defined by a number on the scale or a size on a clothing tag.

-I will do anything to have a perfect body.

Body image issues typically affect girls more than boys, but boys are affected as well. However, girls are more likely to have negative outcomes due to their body image issues and more likely to develop an eating disorder.

Parents can play a pivotal role in their child's self-image. Yes, there are outside influences, but when parents don't body shame themselves and show love for their own body, children are more likely to feel the same about their body and appearance.

Reflect the self-imag you want your kids to see in themselves. Let's elevate body positivity! God created us beautifully! ~Coach Suzanne Penn
